Come and Play

Workshop Sessions

Lute playing is steeped in a rich history of community playing and singing and we are delighted to welcome Ciska Mertens - President of the Netherlands Lute Society and Jacob Heringman to our festival to host a community ‘come and play’ session. Ciska will be running the first music making session on Thursday and Jacob will run a further session on Friday. Both of the ‘come and play’ sessions will take place in the wonderful Martineau Hall, next door to our main venue - The Octagon Chapel. We invite you all from far and wide to bring your Lutes, and join in with some Lute Songs sung in English and Dutch. The sessions will explore Dowland’s lute songs and will provide a unique insight into how his music would have been received 400 years ago.

Open Lute Playing Space

We have created a space where Lute players can come together to perform. This space will be open on Thursday and Friday, please click here for times. These playing opportunities will take place in Martineau Hall. We will provide manuscripts for people to play from or please feel free to bring your own. We would be delighted to hear you perform during these sessions. They are open to all and are provided on a drop in basis so performers and listeners alike can be free to experience the true community aspect of Lute playing.
